The Consistent Underwater Edit #2: White Balance Sets the Foundation

Correcting White Balance first creates a reliable color foundation for every editing decision that follows.

Most underwater photographers understand that White Balance is important. 

However, simply knowing that it matters is not the same as truly understanding why it should be addressed first

This is often where many underwater editing workflows fall apart, which is why understanding the rationale behind proper White Balance is essential for achieving the best results.

You open an image in Lightroom or Lightroom Classic. The water looks too blue or too green. The subject looks dull. Maybe the image feels dark and flat.

So you start moving sliders.

You increase Exposure.

You add Contrast.

You push Dehaze.

You increase Vibrance or Saturation.

You create a mask around the subject.

And after several minutes of editing, the image still does not look right.

The problem may not be that you used the wrong tools.

The problem may be that you used them in the wrong order.

In The Consistent Underwater Edit, the sequence is:

White Balance → Exposure → Presence → Color → Masking → Final Adjustments

White Balance comes first for a reason.

It sets the color foundation for every decision that follows.


Underwater Photography Starts with a Color Problem

Light behaves quite differently underwater than it does on land. 

As we descend, water absorbs various wavelengths of light, with reds disappearing first, followed by oranges and yellows. The deeper we go, the more the available light shifts toward shades of blue and green. 

This means that an underwater RAW file often starts off with a strong color cast. 

While your camera has recorded the scene, the colors in the file may not resemble what you vividly remember seeing during the dive. 

That’s why choosing the right White Balance setting is the first important step in the editing process, helping bring those colors back to life.

Using Temperature and Tint, you begin to correct the overall color cast and establish a more believable starting point for the image.

The goal is not to make the photograph perfect.

It is not to create the final color.

It is not to make the image dramatic.

The goal is to create a neutral enough foundation that allows you to make better decisions about everything that comes next.

That is a very different way of thinking about White Balance.

White Balance Is Not the Finished Color

This is one of the most important distinctions in the entire workflow.

White Balance and Color are not the same step.

White Balance corrects the overall color foundation.

The later Color step is where you refine individual colors, adjust their relationships, and begin shaping the image's final look.

That is why the workflow is not:

Exposure → Contrast → Saturation → Fix whatever looks wrong

It is:

White Balance → Exposure → Presence → Color → Masking → Final Adjustments

Each step has a job.

White Balance answers the first question:

What should the overall color foundation of this image be?

Only after you answer that question should you begin deciding how bright the image should be, how much contrast or presence it needs, or how individual colors should be refined.


Why Exposure Comes After White Balance

This is where underwater editing differs significantly from many other types of photography.

I explained this relationship in more detail in Why Underwater Exposure Depends on White Balance.

White Balance does not change the actual exposure you captured underwater.

But it does change how the image is rendered and how you perceive the brightness and color relationships within the photograph.

A heavily blue or green image can make a subject appear dull, dark, or lifeless.

If you begin adjusting Exposure before establishing a better White Balance, you may increase Exposure because the subject appears too dark.

Then you correct White Balance.

Suddenly, the subject may appear brighter than you expected.

Now you have to go back and adjust Exposure again.

That is rework.

The same thing can happen with Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks.

You make one set of decisions while looking at an image with an incorrect color foundation.

Then you correct the color cast.

Now those earlier decisions no longer feel right.

This is one of the reasons underwater photographers can spend so much time going back and forth between sliders.

The problem is not necessarily a lack of Lightroom knowledge.

The problem is that the edit has no stable starting point.


The Wrong Foundation Creates More Work Later

Think about building a house.

You would not install the windows, paint the walls, and arrange the furniture before checking the foundation.

Yet that is exactly how many underwater photographs are edited.

A photographer may begin with:

  • Exposure

  • Contrast

  • Texture

  • Clarity

  • Dehaze

  • Saturation

  • Masks

Then, somewhere near the end, they decide the image is still too blue or too green and make a large White Balance adjustment.

That change can affect how the entire edit feels.

The exposure may need to be reconsidered.

The contrast may now feel too strong.

The colors may become oversaturated.

The subject mask may no longer blend naturally with the surrounding water.

The final adjustments become an attempt to repair problems created earlier in the workflow.

That is exactly what a repeatable system is designed to prevent.

When White Balance comes first, you establish a better foundation before investing time in the rest of the edit.

You may still fine-tune your White Balance later. Editing is not a rigid process.

But your major correction should happen early.

That gives the rest of the workflow something stable to build on.

Temperature and Tint Work Together

For underwater photographs, White Balance is rarely just about making an image warmer.

Temperature helps move the image between cooler and warmer tones.

Tint helps balance green and magenta.

Both matter underwater.

An image can be too blue.

It can be too green.

It may also need a combination of Temperature and Tint adjustments to create a believable starting point.

This is why there is no single White Balance number that works for every underwater photograph.

The correct adjustment can change with:

  • Depth

  • Water conditions

  • Available light

  • Strobe or video light use

  • Distance between the camera and the subject

  • Camera and sensor

  • The actual colors within the scene

That is also why I do not teach White Balance as a magic number or a one-click preset.

Underwater photographs are too variable for that.

The better question is:

Does this White Balance give me a believable foundation for the rest of the edit?

That is a question you can learn to answer consistently.


Do Not Chase Perfection in Step One

One of the easiest ways to slow down your editing is to try finishing the entire photograph using the White Balance controls.

You do not need to.

At this stage, you are building the foundation.

You are trying to remove the strongest unwanted color cast and create a more useful starting point.

You are not trying to perfect every blue in the water.

You are not trying to make every coral color pop.

You are not trying to create your final signature style.

Those decisions come later.

This is another reason the sequence matters.

When every tool is expected to solve every problem, editing becomes confusing.

When each step has a clear purpose, editing becomes much easier to understand.


A Simple Question to Ask Before Moving On

Before leaving the White Balance step, ask yourself:

Does the overall color now feel believable enough for me to judge the rest of the image?

Not perfect.

Not finished.

Believable enough to move forward.

Look at areas that can help you evaluate the color:

  • Sand

  • Neutral rocks

  • White markings on marine life

  • A diver's equipment

  • Known colors in coral or reef structures

  • Skin tones, when appropriate

You can also use Lightroom's White Balance selector when the image contains a useful neutral reference.

But underwater photographs do not always provide a perfectly neutral target.

That is where experience and judgment become important.

The goal is not to force every underwater photograph into the same numerical setting.

The goal is to develop a repeatable decision-making process.


What Happens When You Skip This Step?

Suppose you open an underwater image and immediately add Contrast, Clarity, Dehaze, and Saturation.

The image may initially look more dramatic.

But if the White Balance is still wrong, you may simply be making the wrong colors stronger.

A blue cast becomes a stronger blue cast.

A green cast becomes a richer green cast.

Then you start trying to correct individual colors.

You reduce Aqua.

You change Blue.

You add Red.

You create masks.

Soon, you are making increasingly complex adjustments to solve a problem that should have been addressed early on.

This is how an edit becomes difficult to manage.

The more corrections you stack on top of an unstable foundation, the harder it becomes to understand what is actually causing the problem.

A consistent workflow helps prevent that.


The Goal Is Fewer Corrections, Not More Sliders

A good editing system is not about using every tool in Lightroom.

It is about making the right decisions in the right sequence.

When White Balance is handled first:

Exposure decisions become easier.

Presence adjustments become more intentional.

Color refinement becomes more precise.

Masks can solve specific local problems instead of trying to rescue the entire image.

Final adjustments can polish the photograph rather than repair the workflow.

That is the real benefit of sequence.

You reduce unnecessary backtracking.

You understand why you are making each adjustment.

And over time, your edits become more consistent because you are solving the same types of problems in the same logical order.


White Balance Is Step One, Not the Whole Edit

White Balance is critical.

But White Balance alone will not finish an underwater photograph.

That is another common mistake.

You correct the color cast, and the image looks better, so you keep adjusting Temperature and Tint, hoping to restore every missing color.

Eventually, the image begins to look unnatural.

The sand may become too warm.

The water may shift in an unwanted direction.

Neutral areas may start to look magenta.

That is usually a sign that White Balance is being asked to do too much.

Remember the sequence:

White Balance → Exposure → Presence → Color → Masking → Final Adjustments

White Balance establishes the foundation.

Then we move forward.

Exposure controls the overall brightness and tonal structure.

Presence helps create depth, definition, and visual impact.

Color refines the individual colors within the image.

Masking solves specific local problems.

Final Adjustments polish the photograph and help bring out your signature style.

The power is not in any single step.

The power is in how the steps work together.

A Repeatable System Builds Confidence

One of the biggest frustrations I hear from underwater photographers is that they can create an edit they love but do not know how to repeat it.

One photograph turns out beautifully.

The next one does not.

They move the same sliders, but the results are different.

That creates the feeling that good editing is unpredictable.

It does not have to be.

Consistency does not mean every image receives the same settings.

It means every image goes through the same decision-making process.

That is the difference.

A shallow reef scene and a deep wreck photograph may need very different White Balance adjustments.

A strobe-lit macro image and a natural-light wide-angle image may need completely different settings.

But the process remains the same.

You start by establishing the color foundation.

Then you move to the next step.

That is how a system creates consistency without turning your photography into a preset.

The next time you open an underwater photograph in Lightroom or Lightroom Classic, resist the urge to start fixing everything at once.

Begin with one question:

Is the White Balance giving me the right foundation for the rest of the edit?

Correct the major color cast.

Get the image to a believable starting point.

Then move forward.

Do not try to finish the photograph in Step One.

And do not build the rest of the edit on top of a color foundation you already know is wrong.

Better underwater editing does not come from moving more sliders.

It comes from understanding what to adjust, why you are adjusting it, and what should come next.

White Balance is where that process begins.
