Navigating the Depths of Underwater Photography: Gear vs. Post-Processing
As a Professional Underwater Photographer, I notice that the trend or focus of this art form is less on camera equipment and more on post-processing. As an example, smartphone cameras are approaching the high-end SLR and Mirrorless camera market, and have multiple lenses as part of the phone.
Below I give you some of my thoughts on why I make the above claim and allow you to challenge them in the comments.

In the ever-evolving world of underwater photography, a noticeable shift in focus has emerged. Traditionally, the emphasis was heavily placed on camera equipment, but as technology advances, the spotlight now shines on the power of post-processing. With smartphones encroaching on the territory of high-end SLR and Mirrorless cameras, equipped with multiple lenses, it's worth exploring this trend. In this blog post, we'll delve into the debate, supporting and disputing the claim that camera equipment is losing ground to post-processing in the realm of underwater photography.
Supporting the Claim: The Smartphone Revolution
- Accessibility: Perhaps the most compelling argument in favor of this trend is the accessibility that smartphone cameras bring to underwater photography. Almost everyone now carries a powerful camera in their pocket, democratizing the art form. This accessibility has introduced a broader audience to the beauty of underwater worlds.
- Price: Even though the price of high-end Smartphones is getting up there in costs, they still do not approach the costs of most SLRs / Mirrorless systems, which allows a much larger market to explore Underwater Photography by using these multi-function Smartphones.
- Portability: Smartphones are exceptionally portable. They're lightweight and compact, which is a game-changer for underwater photographers who want to travel light. No more lugging around heavy camera gear, making underwater expeditions more manageable.
- Multiple Lenses: Smartphone cameras have evolved to include multiple lenses, such as ultra-wide, macro, and telephoto options. These versatile lenses allow photographers to capture a wide array of subjects without the need for cumbersome interchangeable lenses.
- Advanced Software: Smartphone camera apps often come equipped with powerful editing tools. This means photographers can make real-time adjustments and enhancements underwater, reducing the reliance on post-processing software.
- Raw Image Quality: High-end SLR and Mirrorless cameras are renowned for their ability to capture images in RAW format, preserving a vast amount of image data. This raw data offers unparalleled flexibility during post-processing, especially in challenging underwater lighting conditions. I have heard that some of these new high-end smartphones now have the ability to capture their data in RAW format, so this claim might not be that significant in the future.
- Specialized Gear: Underwater environments present unique challenges, from color shifts to exposure difficulties. Specialized camera gear, such as underwater housings and strobes, is designed to address these challenges, ensuring photographers capture the best possible images straight from the camera.
- Creative Control: Professional cameras offer creative control that goes beyond what smartphone cameras can achieve. Manual settings, customizable lenses, and the ability to work with high-quality underwater filters all contribute to a photographer's ability to capture truly exceptional shots. The ability to use multiple light sources and types of lighting (UV, etc.) is much easier to achieve with a large stable platform on a housing.
- Depth and Precision: Post-processing isn't just about enhancements; it's about correcting underwater anomalies. Camera equipment plays a vital role in minimizing issues like backscatter and color distortion, which can be challenging to correct in post-processing.
- Choose Wisely: Select your equipment based on the specific underwater scenarios you intend to shoot. High-end cameras shine in environments with challenging lighting and unique subjects, while smartphones excel in versatility and accessibility.
- Master Post-Processing: Invest time in mastering post-processing techniques. Learn to correct color shifts, reduce noise, and enhance images to their full potential. Creative editing can help you convey your unique artistic vision.
- Experiment and Adapt: Underwater conditions can change rapidly. Be adaptable and willing to experiment with both your equipment and post-processing techniques to adapt to varying situations.
- Learn Continuously: Connect with the underwater photography community, learn from others, and seek feedback to grow and improve your skills continually.
