Avoiding and Minimizing Problems when Preparing Your Gear for Underwater Photography/Video
Introduction
Underwater photography and videography can be a fascinating and rewarding
adventure. However, to ensure stunning results, it's essential to prepare your
gear properly and take preventive measures against potential issues like
flooding and fogging. In this blog post, I'll discuss the steps users should
take to avoid and minimize these problems.
1. Invest in Quality Gear
Purchasing high-quality, waterproof camera housings, lights, and strobes
is the first step toward avoiding equipment failure. Ensure that these
accessories are specifically designed for underwater use and have good customer
reviews and recommendations.
Avoid the temptation to purchase cheap or inexpensive gear. Never use
things like “Camera-in-a-Bag”.
2. Perform Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance of your underwater gear is crucial to prevent
unexpected issues. Below are some useful tips:
- Thoroughly
rinse all equipment with fresh water after each dive to remove salt and
other debris. Let soak for a minimum of 10 minutes after exiting the salt
water. Make sure to fully submerge your equipment in freshwater as soon
as possible. Do not let the gear dry without rinsing it in fresh water.
- Inspect O-rings
and seals for any signs of wear, cracking, or damage. Lubricate them with
silicone grease regularly.
- Keep your gear
stored in a dry and dust-free environment to prevent moisture buildup. I
recommend a place where the humidity is below 45%. Do not store equipment
in cold environments if outside or water temperatures are warm.
3. Conduct a Pre-Dive Check
Before going underwater, it's essential to conduct a pre-dive check to
ensure everything is in order. Here's a checklist to follow:
- Check the camera
housing for any signs of damage or cracks.
- Ensure all
O-rings and seals are properly seated and lubricated.
- If the camera
housing has a vacuum port, check to ensure it holds a proper vacuum.
- Test the
functionality of camera controls and buttons.
- Confirm the
attachment of lights, strobes, and other accessories.
- Check that any
cables are not kinked or damaged and are properly sealed to their
connected devices.
- Take a test
shot/video, to ensure all equipment is working properly.
4. Use Desiccant Packs
To prevent lenses from fogging due to humidity, consider using desiccant
packs. Placing a few of these packs inside your camera housing can help absorb
moisture and reduce the chances of lens fogging.
5. Proper Handling of Foggy Lenses
If your camera lens fogs up underwater, surface and make sure you dissemble
your gear, after you dry it, in a clean dry location. Avoid the temptation to
wipe it with your hand or any cloth. This can potentially damage your lens.
Instead, try the following:
- Remove the
camera from the water and expose it to air for a few moments.
- Use an anti-fog
solution specifically designed for underwater equipment.
- Gently blow
warm air from your regulator over the lens to accelerate the defogging
process.
6. Perform Regular Leak Tests
Performing regular leak tests is a crucial step to identify any potential
issues before they become major problems. Follow the manufacturer's
instructions to conduct leak tests on your camera housing regularly. This will
help you catch any leaks early on and prevent potential flooding incidents.
Conclusion
Taking the necessary precautions and following these steps can
significantly minimize the risks of flooding and lens fogging during underwater
photography or videography. By investing in quality gear, performing regular
maintenance, and following proper handling procedures, you can ensure that your
underwater adventures remain memorable and problem-free. Happy diving and
capturing breathtaking shots!
